Group N rally activities, governing mass-produced cars, are pretty much impossible to win unless the quality of the car is very, very high. Impreza STI established the position of Fuji Heavy Industries' mass-produced models as the benchmark in the category; but on the other hand, in order to achieve this level of success, the development team at STI had to work very closely with FHI to include many minute spec changes every year to ensure consistent high performance in customer-level rally events. This is why Imprezas are all doing very well in national-level rally championships everywhere in the world. As described above, the ever-evolving Impreza STI is based on the requests and needs of customers from all over the world.
The special edition S203, which bettered the driving performance and feel of the Impreza, contributed to the establishment of a new genre, the "premium sports sedan." The "S" is given only to cars that have had their engines and chassis worked on by STI.
